Welcome to our school

Randolph Safety and Security

Parents were asked what information about School Safety would help them,
and what form that information should take. Parents suggested that the
following definitions, procedures, and directions be part of our
school’s web site.

The following definitions were explained...

Code Red:
Term for a dangerous or unstable emergency situation in which
we lock our doors and wait for instructions.

Code Red -- respond:
We do not use this designation of a Code Red. We
lock down everything and everyone first, and then separately announce if
the emergency response team members or others without direct supervision
of students are needed at the command center.

Code Red -- no respond:
We do not use this designation of a Code Red. We
lock down everything and everyone first, expecting no one to come to the
command center unless a separate, specific announcement is made to do so.

Command Center:
The contact place for the emergency response team (ERT),
first responders, and all information to staff, students, and central
office/media.

Lock down:
Term for securing the premises during an emergency.

Critical incident:
Term for a dangerous or unstable emergency situation
in which a loss of life or serious injury may occur.

Evacuation site:

The relocation place students and staff go to if we are
ordered to leave our building.

Emergency Response Team:

Members of our Randolph Safety and Security
Committee, who participate in additional trainings and respond in a Code
Red when called.

The following procedures were explained...

Our Procedures at Randolph in a Code Red:

Contact 911; call Code Red
Lock exterior door
Lock classroom doors
Attendance; account for all students
Search, secure, report
Evacuation, if ordered by first responders
Controlled dismissal, if ordered by first responders or LPS officials

What We Expect From Parents Before, During, and After a Code Red:

Before
Talk with your children calmly about being safe at school and how that
includes practicing for different types of emergencies-- fire, tornado,
and code red. Emphasize the need for them to stay calm, follow
directions, and trust their teachers and school adults to keep them
safe. Encourage your children to tell you what their class does in a
fire drill, tornado drill, or Code Red drill.

During
In the event of a Code Red, DO NOT call the school or come to the
school. Listen to the radio or television for directions. All our
communications to parents will come from the district office which tells
the local media what directions to give to parents. In the event of an
evacuation or controlled dismissal, parents will be given directions on
where and when to come to pick up their child(ren).

After
Be patient with the controlled dismissal process. Everyone wants their
child first, but a procedure is in place to dismiss our youngest
students first, through to the fifth grade students. Families with more
than one child will be shown where to wait to pick up their other
child(ren).

Listen to your children tell what happened, what they felt, and what they thought during the Code Red. Reassure them of their safety and your love and protection.
